If you are a student of Agriculture field then you must have heard about the major subjects.
When you are studying B.SC agriculture, then after some minor semesters, you have to choose a major subject.
There are following majors in Agriculture department
- Soil Science
- Agronomy
- Plant breeding and genetics
- Plant pathology
- Agriculture economics
- Agriculture extension
- Forestry
Now the question is which one you should choose?
Here we are discussing every major according to there present scope.
Let's start with the first agriculture major
Agronomy
Agronomy is the art and science of improving the way of growing crops by using different agronomic practices.
In today's market, agronomist are mostly working in private sectors.
They are mostly preferred by chemicals and pesticides companies.
In Government sector, Agriculture officer is the prominent job for agronomist.
In Agronomy we learn about different practices like sowing methods, harvesting techniques, weeding and irrigation etc.
This field is good for those students, who wants to learn and implement these practices. It does not include complex concepts and theories, which is a good thing in my opinion.
Soil science
Soil science as name suggest is the study of soil to improve the soil for crops growth by using different practices.
Soil science is studied for getting the knowledge about the type of soil and what crops can we grow on that type of soil.
Many soil scientist are researching for different ways to enhance the soil fertility so that more crops can be grown.
Soil science major is complex and students have to understand the theories and different concepts.
But in case of scope, this major has many opportunities for jobs in government sectors as well as in private sector.
Plant breeding and genetics
PBG is the study of genetics and different breeding methods to improve the yield and other traits of crops.
Plant breeding is similar to botany because we study plants and there structure and morphology.
The main objective is to understand the genetics behavior of a plant type and developing Crosses between different varieties of plants to develop new and better varieties.
Many seeds producing companies are hiring plant breeders.
Hybrid seed production is also an important part of PBG.
Many breeders can produce there own hybrid seed by doing developing Crosses with other cultivars.
Plant breeders can make their own business by producing hybrid seeds and selling them to farmers.
Plant pathology
Plant pathology is the study of plants pathogens, to make pesticides to kill harmful pathogens.
Plant pathologist are working in chemicals companies and mostly producing different pesticides for crops.
There is a better chance for students to get job in plant pathology sector.
Agriculture economist studies the economy related to agriculture products. Agriculture economists are working as a marketer for supply and demand terms.
they basically studies the market and tells the farmers about the trend and which types of crops are more beneficial.
Many private agriculture industries are hiring agriculture economists.
Students who have interest related to commerce and want to make there own business, should choose agriculture economics as their major subject.
Agriculture extension is study for convincing farmers to use recommended practices, which are beneficial for both farmers and governments as well.
The main purpose of agriculture extension worker is to communicate with farmers about the new product ( Pesticide, seeds, chemicals ).
Many companies hire agriculture extension workers for marketing of their products.
If you are looking for a Job right after your graduation, then agriculture extension is best for you.
Forestry being the underrated major of agriculture, it has been associated with the protection of forests and grass lands etc.
To be honest, forestry has very few seats in government and private sector. You can become a forest officer but there is a large competition.
Studying agriculture or any other subject does not mean you are going to get the job because, it is the individual capability that how much he or she have learned from his major and what he can offers to the organization.
With increasing competition in agriculture field, it is very difficult to get a good job.
In government sector, jobs are becoming instinct because of government stupid policies and corruption.
There is a better chance for students to get job in plant pathology sector.
